The Westland Wyvern was a Cold War Strike aircraft used by the Royal Navy in the 1950s. The design called for a piston engine to be used, which would be replaced with a gas turbine when it became available. Very few of the piston engine versions were made, the majority of the production of 98 being gas turbine. The Wyvern had two four-bladed propellors similar to the late model Spitfires, and could carry rockets, bombs or a torpedo for the strike role.
It saw combat in the Suez Crisis of 1956, flying from HMS Eagle.
It was fitted with an ejector seat, which was quite rare for propellor-driven aircraft.
The Wyvern had a short life however, entering service in 1953, and being withdrawn by 1958, as jet aircraft began to be used.
The Wyvern was armed with 4 x 20mm cannon, and up to 3,000lb of external stores.
